Multi-niche writers don’t fit into any neat boxes. 

Writers who are interested in a variety of fields not only can, but should write about a variety of things. There are many more Multi-niche writers than you would think, and several well-known authors dabble in more than the field they’re well known for. 

We live in a hyper-specialization world; where value is given to the single-focus expert and the saying “jack of many trades, master of none” is taken as truth. But this is a fairly recent development in human history. For many centuries, those who worked and studied broadly were valued members of society, and we still study their varied works to this day—think Leonardo da Vinci and Benjamin Franklin.

The advice to choose a niche may work for many professionals, but creative professionals often don’t profit from this advice—literally or figuratively. By forcing creatives to choose one sole area of focus, we inadvertently squash their driving force—creativity.

Creativity is by its nature multi-niche; creatives are often happy dabbling in various media and experimenting with different outlets. Writers are creative professionals, and as such, should be encouraged to explore many avenues.

Certainly, some writers fall in love with one area of focus and are happy writing about that for the rest of their lives, but usually these writers were experts in an area prior to becoming writers; writing is a secondary passion. For those of us who are writers at our core, whose driving force is the research, synthesis, and dissemination of what we have learned, hyper-focusing is the opposite of what makes us successful. What drives us is the wonder of learning and writing about what we have learned, and being an expert in one lone area does not match with what makes us great writers.
